The Esquiline Hill is the highest of the seven hills of Roman times. In ancient Rome it was one of the better districts in their city, it was a residential area. At around 475Bc a shrine was build on the hill. It was a good neighborhood until a fire destroyed much of it in around 60AD. During Roman times the eastern end of the hill was for garbage and burial sites.
