Part I:
I do think that Oedipus is responsible for some of his actions. When he killed his father, I do not think that he was responsible for knowing it was his father, but he did kill a man which he could not say he is not responsible for doing. When Oedipus married his mother though I do believe that he was not responsible. In this case I was the fault of the mother if she recognized him. If Oedipus’s mother did not recognize him then I think it is really neither one of there faults. If people though did not have a choice of free will then I would look at Oedipus’s view differently. Fate to me seems to be something that is already planned for you, sort of like a story on how your entire life is going to be or it could be just the major things that you are going to do. Either way without free will I don’t think anyone can be guilty for a guilty person is someone who chooses the bad version of two options, but when you don’t have a choice then you can’t be claimed guilty. On the other hand you can only be innocent within yourself. Other people would not really be able to tell. To be innocent within yourself, it would have to be a person who is forced to do something because of fate but if it were bad the person doing it would not like what they were doing and know that is was wrong.
Part II:
"Act to consolidate your fame, for now, thanks to you eagerness in earlier days, the city celebrates you as its saviour."(47-49) - In this the priest is saying because of how smart and how much Oedipus wanted to escape his fate he was a great leader to many people.
"For in this matter, even if a god were not prompting us, it would not be right for you to simply leave things as they are, and not to purify the murder of a man who was so noble and who was your king." (255-259) - Oedipus is saying that though the gods did help them it still would be wrong if the people were to let the murder of Laius to just get away with it with no punishment.
Excellent job with part 1 - you're one of the few to tackle the second half of that prompt and you did well with it.
