Answers for Oedipus Play

1. Foreshadow- 1. “ With the god’s help
this will all come to light successfully, or else it will prove our common ruin.” 175-177 This may anticipate that Apollo may save Thebes or destroy it.If he is right Thebes will survive and flutter with beauty and greatness. If he is wrong our city could be destroyed. That would be bad.

2. “For he’s been gone too long,
well past the time he should have taken.” 87-88 This anticipates that Creon may have been killed on his way to Apollo's temple or on the way back. This would not be good for Oedipus because he sent his brother to try to be the savior of Thebes. He may have gone missing which may still mean hope for Thebes because he may escape his captors and find his way back. Creon could have also gotten lost and never find his way back. If he doesn't make it back, Thebes could lay in ruins.

3. “I would be a hard-hearted man indeed,
if I did not pity suppliants like these.” 14-15 This anticipates that Oedipus will help the citizens of Thebus any way he can. Towards the end of the play I predict that Oedipus will have saved the people of Thebus and brought the city back to life.

Question 2.He says that the murderes of the former king of Thebes should be punished by death. He says if you show yourself you might not get the death penalty but you will still be severly punished. I believe this is justice for the murderes because they murdered the king of a city and that should be punishable by death just like it is in the United States today if you kill the president. If you kill someone, it is your fate to go to jail as a punishment. Fate and justice are intertwined because justice is punishing the guilty to protect the citizens and that would be their fate if they commited a crime. You can have justice and fate at the same time because of the explanation I gave in the last sentence.

Question 3.Cadmus- introduced writing to the Greeks and founded the city of Thebus

    Delian- a citizen of Delos

Countenance- an expression on a face

  1. Oedipus also wanted to find out who killed Creon and he also said that if the person who killed Creon is from out of state then he must not stay mute, and if the person didn't reveal themselves anytime soon then the consequences were more severe.
