“If you’re to rule as you are doing now, it’s better to be king in a land of men than in a desert.” (62-64) This is saying Oedipus needs to continue ruling like he has done in the past and do not let the citizens suffer or we will all hate you. No one will be listening to you and that is where the ruling in a desert comes into play.
“We might get somewhere if we had one fact— we could find many things, if we possessed some slender hope to get us going.” (144-146) This is saying that if we find one clue about how Laius died they could find more clues and eventually find the bandits that had killed him. Once they find that, lord Apollo said it would help Thebes return to its grateful state since it is in a depression at the time.
