The Quirinal Hill (today)

The Quirinal hill is one of the seven hills in Rome. The hill is normally quiet and has the Trevi fountain near it. The Quirinal hill has the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli on it and “The hill is named after the god Quirinus.” (sources)

Esquiline

The Esquiline Hill was the highest of the seven hills of roman times. In ancient Rome it was one of the better districts in their city, it was a residential area. At around 475Bc a shrine was build on the hill. It was a good neighborhood until a fire destroyed much of it in around 60AD. During Roman times the eastern end of the hill was for garbage and buriel sites. Emporer Nero also build his golden house on it. \

-1 What are the differences between the three accounts (Livy, Vergil, and Ovid)? Be very specific - every minor detail could be important. To be clear, I just want you to list unique details here.
Livy-
→ Stresses on Romulus and Remus's story about the vultures, and how Rome was formed.
→ Cacus was not a monster, he was a shepherd
→ Hercules kills him with his club
→ Oxen, not heifers and bulls.
→ Took oxen from fields, not stalls.
→ Romulus sets up temple for traditional latin gods and Hercules on the hill were he killed Cacus.
→ He was afraid of what stole his oxen, until he finds out where the rest of his oxen were.
→ Falls asleep after fighting monster, Geryon.
→ Falls asleep in grassy place near the Tiber River.
→ Cacus begs for his life, and calls to other shepherds for help.

Vergil-
→ Cacus is a murderous monster.
→ Who happens to belch fire.
→ Bulls and Heifers not oxen.
→ Cacus took bulls form stalls not fields.
→ Hercules grabbed his weapons, shot missiles at Cacus.
→ Hercules is enraged by the stealing of his cattle.
→ Cacus belched fire and smoke, completely submerging the cave in darkness.
→ The arrows caused sunlight to enter the cave.
→ People saw Cacus's carcass at the end.
→ People celebrated Hercules and the death of Cacus.
→ Cacus covers the cave with a rock.
→ Hercules took a tree, causing the banks to break and water to flood the cave and push the rock away.

Ovid-
→ Hercules breaks through the cliff
→ Cave is in a forest
→ Cacus puts part of a hill in front of the cave, not a rock.
→ Falls asleep in the Tegean house
→ Cacus first fought back with sticks, logs, and boulders.
→ Cacus can spew flames
→ Hercules used a triple-knotted club to kill Cacus
→ Hercules offered one of the ox to Jupiter (Zeus)
→ Sets up an alter after killing Cacus
→ The king's mother predicts when Hercules dies, and then turns into a goddess herself.

-2 Discussing each of the three accounts separately, what is the impact of the details told that are unique to that story? In other words, consider which details only Livy uses and the effect that those have on your understanding of Hercules and Cacus (and then repeat the same process for Vergil and Ovid). Also, consider the Proxy-Connection: keep-alive

ip side - are there details omitted from that story that are used in the other two accounts? How is the larger message influenced by the inclusion or omission of those details?

Liviys story is a very vague sense of the story. I believe his sole purpose was to make you understand why Romulus built the temple where he did. The fact that he leaves out the fire-breathing monster and replaces him with Cacus the greedy Shepherd makes the story's foucs more on Romulus and his temple in Rome.

Esquiline Hill in Rome is one of the least visited tourist sites. Though during the Roman empire it was a very important hill. It is in Rome and is one of seven hills that the city was built upon. The others hills names are Palatine Hill, Capitoline Hill, Aventine Hill, Caellan Hill, Viminal Hill, and the Quirinal Hill. high above the valley later the colosseum was built. Their is a church that is built on top of the Esquiline Hill.

Jordan

Livy’s-There are many differences in there storys. Livys story varies very much from other storys. It starts out with a history lesson about were the city of Rome was built, and how it was built were Hercules slayed a monster. Then it talks about how he crossed a river with his finest. He also talks of how Cacus trys to prevent hercules from finding his cave. He tried to hide were he brought them from Hercules but he was still found. When He was found he supposivly was slayed by a single blow from Hercules, after trying to get his comrades to help him. In the other story’s he puts up a fierce fight and has no comrades to help him.

Livys story is in my opinion the worst story or interesting one of the three story’s. Livy uses details that are associated with showing just how they chose a place to build Rome and some of its history before it was around. His story tells me the least information about the fight between Hercules and Cacus. It tellls me Cacus is a monster and a theif and Hercules is a hero. It is very different from the other story’s. I do not think it sends the message Hercules is a great hero. But details do not seem to support it because the climax of the story is. Hercules killed him with a blow from his club, after vainly asking for help from his companions. So the larger message is very untouched here.

Vergils

In Vergils story it talks about how Cacus drove off the cattle from their stalls. In other storys it does not say they had stalls were just temporarily there. It talks about how he was feeding them when one of the four cows that he had stolen from Hercules awnser the call. When he followed its path he found Cacus’s cave. In this story Hercules destroys the top of his cave were Cacus had tried to hide from him. There they had a great fight which Hercules eventually won. Then he had a great feast with the stolen cows and invited other shepherds to the feast to eat it with him. There they had enormous part with songs and priests. They also song a song of what monsters he had defeated and you had destroyed every monster you have ever faced.

Vergils story tells me about how they fought and why it happened. It gives me a Understanding about what happened. It tells about a great party after it were they celebrate Hercules triumph over the monster Cacus. I think it gives me the most information about the story. It is very detailed and helps show how Hercules is a great hero. It also gives me many details about the monster Cacus. I think this story shows the larger message very well.

Ovid

In Ovids story Hercules had two cows stolen not four. He also was not able to find them but he heard the cows mooing or he would have never found them. When he finds the cave they are blocked in by a boulder. But this time Hercules did break through it and had another enormous fight with Cacus. He won also and invited other shepherds to come. He also set up a alter to Maxima, the Mightiest.

Ovids story makes me think of how great a hero Hercules is.

Livy starts out with saying that Remus received an omen (a negative point), Virgil starts out with with hunger being banished (a positive point) and Ovid starts in the midst of the story (not making a point), or they are very different in tone. Livy is telling facts or making is point as forward as possible. In stead of putting it in story form he is just saying what needs to be said as a fact. Virgil is in the form of poetry, or epic poetry. He describes things like Livy but he adds details and emotions to it. Ovid also uses poetry but he is using his poetry to tell a story. He gives much detail in every felling that a character has, he also uses much dialogue. Livy puts much stress on the ways Rome were formed as the others didn't. Livy sees Cacus as a totally different Ovid and Virgil. Livy says that Cacus is a Shepard while the others don't. Virgil says that Caucus is a monster, but I think that Virgil is trying to make a point, that Caucus is only a barbarian, or he is inhuman - just like a monster. In Ovoid's story that is different then the other two, is that Hercules removed the tree and flooded the banks around the river.
